Today is meant to be freeing. We began our journey twenty-three days ago musing over how nice it might be if we had a giant ‘delete’ button for time sucker-uppers. Well today, you have at least a small button. It’s most likely on your phone but it may also be metaphorically a contact address book or old-school Rolodex that only requires an eraser or pull of a card.

Why you may be wondering would I suggest deleting one or more contacts today? After all, aren’t leaders meant to be networking masters? Yes and no. Sure networking is one key to success for the majority of leaders. That is networking with the correct people. If you’ve been a working professional for more than five minutes you are bound to have outdated contacts. Some have left prior positions with no forwarding contact info. Some have passed away and some simply have shown repeatedly that they are not positive connections for any number of reasons.

So today, as painful as it may be if you’re a numbers guy or gal, please take the next few minutes to run through your contacts. If you come across someone who for the life of you, you can’t remember how you know them, delete. If you find a contact that has proven him or her-self to be repeatedly toxic, delete them. Any other criteria you deem appropriate, put it in play today and hit delete, erase, or pull that contact card.
